The Foster carer approval process

  1. When you first contact Focused Fostering by telephone 020 8670 0400 , you can talk to me, Linda Shephard. If you have questions, I can help with information and we can start the approval process
  2. When your initial enquiry is by using the website enquiry voucher, letter or email then I will discreetly telephone you to undertake the above
  3. We can agree an initial visit on the phone, provided you as the applicant(s) meet the criteria
  4. On completion of the initial visit, and the social worker feels that the family have the potential to move forward then an application form will be left with you to complete. ( nothing further will happen until the agency has received your completed application back )
  5. When the application form has been returned Focused Fostering agency will request statutory checks and send off for references
  6. A social worker will be allocated to the family to undertake an assessment, which will take the form of a succession of home visits and discussions
  7. You must arrange for a medical to be done by your GP. You will be given the necessary forms and letters to arrange the medical. The agency will meet the cost of the medical
  8. During the assessment process you will be invited to attend the training for prospective carers this is called ‘Skills to Foster' training
  9. At the end of the assessment we will go before the Fostering Panel for recommendation. The social worker undertaking the assessment will go with you
  10. The agency decision maker either agrees or disagrees with the panel's recommendation ( it is unlikely that at this stage he will disagree ), and the you will be informed of this in writing along with a foster carer agreement to sign
  11. You are now ready to foster and you will be allocated a supervising social worker

This whole process can take between 3 & 4 months

Why not provide a safe and stable family setting AS a Foster carer?

Here's what one of our Carers had to say

“For me fostering is both challenging and rewarding at the same time. It's important to go into it with your eyes wide open and to expect all sorts of situations, but the chance to make a difference to a child's future far outweighs any difficulties you might experience. Focused Fostering provides me with great support on both a friendly and professional basis. The agency feels like a family to me and it's great to know that anytime I call, whoever I speak to, the support they give me is fantastic!”

Family fostering

You WIll need:

• Spare bedroom available for fostering
• Experience of caring for children *
• Time and ability to provide each child with the care they need
• To attend training to develop confidence and parenting skills

You will enjoy being a vital part of the team at Focused Fostering and share a sense of achievement
*Your experience of caring for children may have been gained as a parent, in a work environment or in a voluntary capacity. Although our carers do foster younger children, the greatest demand is for foster carers for older children
Most foster children do take time before responding to the care that you provide
You'll need to be available during the day should a child not be at school or sometimes there will be a meeting to attend. Return to 'How About A Satisfying Career as a Foster Carer?'
